The victim's name has not been officially released by the sheriff's office as of 5 p.m. Sunday, more than 38 hours after a freshman was found dead in her McLean hall dorm room.

John Helfer, spokesman for Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn, said in an email late Sunday the medical examiner is working on identifying the body. He said he "can't speak as to why it has taken as long as it has."

As the College at Brockport has previously stated, it will hold off on releasing the name of the victim until it has been officially released by the sheriff's office.

Early Sunday afternoon, Dave Mihalyov, chief communication officer at the college, sent an email to students, faculty and staff to keep the campus informed. According to the email, the college anticipates being able to share the information tomorrow.

Although we are aware of the identity of the victim, The Stylus will not be releasing the name of the student until it is released by the sheriff or Medical Examiner's office in order to respect the privacy of friends and family.

A vigil has been scheduled for tomorrow at 9:30 p.m. for the woman, who was killed between 1 and 2:30 a.m. Saturday in her first-floor dorm room. The location has yet to be determined.

Her boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, was picked up at 4 a.m. at a service station off the thruway in Dewitt, near Syracuse. He was charged with second-degree murder and has a preliminary hearing set for 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at Sweden Town Court.
