The Brockport women's track and field team got their revenge on Buffalo State by taking the outdoor SUNYAC championship in blowout fashion. Led by Melissa Scorse and Shannon O'Keeffe, Brockport grabbed 176 points, with Cortland behind them in second place with 138. Buffalo State finished in fourth, with 109.5."It was great knowing we didn't just win by a couple of points," O'Keeffe said. "We won by a huge margin. It was awesome how all the girls pulled together."
O'Keeffe defended her SUNYAC championship in the triple jump by clearing 11.54 meters. Her jump was good enough for the Oneonta facility record. She'll need to improve that to have a chance at nationals.
"It wasn't my jump of the season, but I was happy with winning and getting the points," O'Keeffe said. "The next few weeks are really important for me [heading into nationals]."
O'Keeffe also won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.74 seconds. She'll be competing in both events at ECACs Thursday, May 14 through Friday, May 15.
Scorse finished behind Buffalo State's Latoya Edwards in both preliminary events in the 100-and-200-meter dashes, but won each event in the finals. She edged Taniqua Hollingsworth by one-tenth of a second in the 200.
Those were the only two first-place finishes for the women, but plenty of second and third-place finishes carried Brockport to the big win.
Amanda Elias finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 17.41 seconds. Melissa Wassink added four points with a fifth-place finish. Wassink also chipped in six points in the 1,500-meter run, by finishing in third place with a time of 4 minutes, 52.4 seconds.
Nicole Sosnoski finished in second in the long jump by clearing 5.15 meters. She also grabbed five points in the triple jump by finishing in fourth place.
Both relay teams took second place, picking up eight points each. In the 4x100-meter relay, Sosnoski, Scorse, Kaitlin Breed and Britney Falcon finished 0.3 seconds behind Buffalo State for first.
Breed and Scorse were joined by O'Keeffe and Elias in the 4x400-meter relay team that also took second.
For the throwers, Stacey Gibbins finished in second in the shot put, while Bridget Mayne and Maggie Needham finished in seventh and eighth, respectively.
Gibbins also took fourth in the discus throw, while Mayne took fifth and third in the hammer throw. In the hammer, Stephanie Powell took fourth, and Hannah Cushman took fifth.
The men got dominating performances from their throws to finish in fourth place with 120 points, just two points behind Buffalo State for third.
Dom Gonzalez hit 55 meters in the hammer throw to improve his provisonally standing, but is still two meters away from the NCAA auto bid.
"The auto would be a personal record for me and would definitely solidify me at nationals," Gonzalez said. "So these two weeks are crucial. Every day counts."
Ray Lund won the weight throw at 46.7 meters, and Zach Williamson won the shot put at 14.41 meters. Lund finished sixth in the shot put. In total, Brockport throwers got 45 points, by far the most of any school.
Rusty Landon was the only other Golden Eagle to win, taking the 400-meter hurdles at 54.42 secnds.
The 4x100-meter relay team also added 10 points, by winning with Zack Hine, Jeff Suhr, Brandon Lindsay and Cevon Carver running at 43.37 seconds. They'll be running at ECAC.
Suhr added six points of his own by finishing in sixth place in both the 100-meter-and-200-meter dashes, but missed ECAC standard in both.
Carver also had a nice day, finishing third in the 110-meter hurdles and sixth in the long jump.
Steve Reiss will be running in the 400-meter dash after finishing fifth at 49.98 seconds. He also finished seventh in the 200.
Pete Manktelow finished fourth in 1,500-meter run by breaking four minutes by five-tenths of a second.
