After opening their season with five consecutive losses, The College at Brockport tennis team won two out of three matches last week. The first match was against the Keuka Storm. The Golden Eagles dominated play, winning by a score of 8-1.
Brockport (2-6 overall, 1-4 SUNYAC) earned victories in all three doubles matches. Kaitlyn Broderick teamed with Carolyn McMeneman at first doubles to win 9-7.
At second doubles, Katelyn Richenberg and Dana Schulte cruised to an 8-1 victory, while Erin McLaughlin and Katie Keller won 8-1 at third singles.
The dominance at doubles isn't surprising, considering it was a point of emphasis throughout the week.
"I think we're all playing better in doubles," McLaughlin said. "We have focused on improving our doubles play in practice."
McLaughlin also earned a win at second singles, 9-7, while Keller won in straight sets at fourth singles.
Other double winners for the Golden Eagles were Broderick (third singles 6-0,6-0) and McMeneman (fifth singles 6-2, 6-2). Kelsey Spinks swept sixth singles for Brockport 6-0, 6-3.
"The win felt good," McLaughlin said. "I think this will help to boost our confidence for our future matches."
For at least one match it did, as Brockport picked up its first SUNYAC win of the year against Fredonia, 6-3.
The Golden Eagles once again swept doubles play, as Broderick/McMeneman, Richenberg/Schulte and McLaughlin/Keller all earned their second doubles win of the week.
McLaughlin (second singles 6-0, 6-0), Broderick (third singles 6-3, 6-2) and Keller (fourth singles 7-6, 3-6, 6-3) were all double winners for the Golden Eagles.
The winning streak ended Sunday as Brockport fell to R.I.T. 9-0.
Spinks lost a heartbreaker at sixth singles 6-4, 3-6, 9-11.
Third singles also was tightly contested as Broderick lost to Michele Caporali 3-6, 6-7(2-7).
Second doubles provided the most drama during doubles play as Richenberg and Wright lost 8-5 to RIT's Caporali and Lindsey Gibson.
The Golden Eagles take on Geneseo today at 3:30 p.m. at Geneseo. This weekend they will take part in the ITA Invitational at William and Smith
