Dear Career Counselor,
I am a junior and I don't have much on my résumé. I'm in activities on campus, but I think I should probably get some experience that is at least related to my major. It would be great to find an internship or a summer job that is related to what I want to do after college. Any suggestions?
-Kara
Dear Kara,
You are in luck. Career Services has a few ways to help you find something for summer that is career related. First, we have more than 10 companies participating in on-campus interviews. Many are recruiting for both internships and full-time positions and are looking at all majors. In order to participate, you will need to e-mail your résumé to gethired@brockport.edu. But hurry, the deadline for submitting your résumé for these interviews is Tuesday, March 23.
Career Services also sponsors the Jobs & Internships Fairs each semester. This semester it will be held Wednesday, March 31 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. Anyone from freshmen to alumni, can talk to the recruiters coming to campus. The purpose of this fair is to help students get their names out to a number of different companies. Most of the companies coming are looking for not only summer jobs or internships, but also to fill part-time or even full-time positions. We will be hosting more than 35 different employers in this month's fair. Right now, 20 of the employers will be holding interviews on campus two weeks after the fair. You can visit our Web site (www.brockport.edu/career) for the complete list of employers that are participating in both the fair, and the on-campus interviews.
Other ways to find internships are to look in our online job database, JobShop at www.brockport.edu/career where you will find internship and summer job listings that companies are looking to advertise. You can also develop your own internship. More information about that can be found on our Web site under "Internships."
In order to prepare for the on-campus interviews and the job fair, don't forget to update your résumé. You can stop into our office in 101 Rakov weekdays between noon and 2 p.m. to have your résumé reviewed by a career adviser. If you can't make those times, feel free to e-mail your résumé to csresume@brockport.edu and a career advisor will critique it and send it back to you with comments and suggestions.
It is also important to dress professionally both for the Jobs and Internships Fair and for on-campus interviews. You want to make a good first impression when talking with recruiters. Make sure you bring extra copies of your résumé so you are ready to hand them out to multiple recruiters. Finally, be confident. You've spent the past semesters preparing for the job world, so now take the opportunity and put those classes to work.
