Brockport track and field athletes earn ECAC marks at Cortland Invitational

The men and women of the Brockport track and field team were hard at work this week at the Cortland Invitational, as the Eagles claimed four first-place finishes along with 12 ECAC qualifying marks in various events

Junior thrower Nicole Jones led the pack with ECAC qualifying marks in the hammer toss and shot put events. Jones won the shot put event with a mark of 13.00 meters and claimed second in the hammer toss with a mark of 47.94 meters. Jones was one of the three Eagles to sweep the shot put event. Senior Maggie Needham took second with an ECAC mark of 12.12 meters and sophomore Kristine Hoover took third with a mark of 11.34 meters.

Hoover also took third, behind Jones, in the hammer toss with an ECAC mark of 45.76.

The men and women’s 4x800 meter relay teams also claimed first prize over the weekend. The men’s team, consisting of junior Brandon Yockel, sophomore Greg Dziuba, junior Alex Chirico, and sophomore Nate Matthews, took first with an ECAC qualifying time of 8:03.56. The women’s team also recorded an ECAC qualifying time of 10:04.08. The team consists of junior Chrissy Wolniewicz, freshman Rachel Malone, freshman Britta Januszkiewicz, and freshman Violet Yox.

Aside from her success with the relay team, Wolniewicz claimed an individual ECAC qualifying time of 18:33.12 in the 5,000-meter run, earning her third place. This finish marks a new personal record for Wolniewicz in the event.

Rounding out the first place finishers, junior Josh Coon took first in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:39.16.

The remaining ECAC qualifying marks were claimed by junior Zach Ferrara, senior Becky Fabbiano, Matthews and the men’s 4x100 meter relay team.

Ferrara, and Fabbiano, both pole vaulters, claimed second and third respectively in the event. Ferrara’s posted a mark of 4.77 meters to claim his ECAC spot and Fabbiano recorded a height of 3.47 to do the same.

Matthews finished second in the 800-meter run and posted the qualifying mark of 1:54.33.

Finishing up the ECAC qualifyers, the men’s 4x100 meter relay team finished second with the qualifying time of 43.41 seconds. The team consists of seniors Zach and Erik Hine, freshman Samuel Taft and freshman Maurice May.  Away from the relay team, Zach Hine snagged a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dash. Hine posted a 100-meter time of 11.41 seconds and a 200-meter time of 22.78 seconds.

Other notable finishes came in both the field and on the track. In the field, junior Will Johnson finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.79 meters.

Thowers Brendon Granschow and Darius Favors both claimed second in the shot put and discus respectively. Granschow, a sophomore, recorded a mark of 13.92 meters while Favors, a freshman, marked a distance of 43.42 meters.

Finishing up the top finishes of the weekend, the women’s 4x100meter relay team finished second with a time of 54.45 seconds. The team consists of freshman Megan Grace, freshman Constance Rodriguez, junior Gina Medici and freshman Ally Massaro.

Next week, the men and women of the Brockport track and field teams will travel to Robert Wesleyan University for the Robert Wesleyan Invitational. Start time is 10 a.m.
