Brockport swimming and diving plunges at SUNYACs

The Brockport swimming and diving teams repeated their overall performances for the second consecutive season at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 20 to 23, hosted by Buffalo State. Like the 2012 season, the women came in sixth place and the men finished seventh. Geneseo took the women’s title and the Cortland won the men’s.

After the first day of competition, freshman Taylor Schaffert and senior Nathan Dubois each led their teams in scoring points.

Schaffert scored points in the 200-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay Thursday. With juniors Paige Whitney and Erin Luke, and senior Eva Lankes, the 200-yard freestyle relay team finished with a time of 1:39.15, edging out Fredonia. Luke posted the fastest leg of the race with a 24.31 to put Brockport in fourth place.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Schaffert swam one-tenth of a second faster than her preliminary races to post a time of 24.57 for  fifth place. Luke also competed in the B-cut finals and finished 12th overall with a time of 25.19.

Shaffert also teamed up with Lankes and sophomores Rachel Coia and Melanie Melewski for the 400-yard medley relay. The freshman anchored the team as they took fifth place with a time of 4:02.82.

Senior diver Audrey Jackson took ninth place on the 3-meter board with a score of 366.25 for the Golden Eagles.  Sophomore Lydia Allen added an 11th place finish for an additional six team points, with a score of 285.05.

The women finished the first day in fifth place with 99 points as a team. 

The 400-yard medley relay team with Melewski, Coia, Lankes and Luke took fourth place and earned Brockport 30 points. They finished with a time of 1:50.13. 

Melewski also took seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke, improving her time by .43 seconds and finishing with a time of 1:08.42. 

The sophomore joined Schaffert, senior Chloe Macdonald and junior Paige Whitney to take seventh overall in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Schaffert was also successful, taking fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a  time of 59.58. Lankes was close behind in sixth place with a time of 1:00.59.

After the second day, the women finished sixth.

On the third and final day of SUNYACs, the lady Eagles finished sixth overall  with 261 points.

Melewski improved her time on the 100-yard breaststroke and also placed sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.49 and scored 13 points for Brockport.

Junior Jennifer Conklin took eighth overall in the 1650-yard freestyle, scoring  11 points for the Eagles.

Schaffert and Lankes both performed well in the 200-yard backstroke taking ninth and 10th place, respectively. Schaffert had a time of 2:11.57 and Lankes finished with a time of 2:13.01.

Schaffert, Lankes, Whitney and Luke had a time of 3:39.82 in the women’s 400-yard freestyle and came in sixth place, scoring 26 points for Brockport.

For the men at SUNYACs, Dubois helped the team place in three events on the first day. 

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Dubois, seniors Joe Klafehn and Kenny Smith and sophomore Dustin Wurster took sixth place with a time of 1:27.47.

Dubois had a 22:04 in the 50-yard freestyle in the A-cut race which helped the Eagles score 11 points. Klafehn took 15th and Smith took 16th in the 50-free B-cut finals.
