  • B-port hockey playoff hopes slip on ice

    With eight seconds left in the game, Brockport's chances at a playoff spot disappeared Saturday, Feb. 18 after a 2-1 loss to Morrisville. Daniel Morello ended the Golden Eagles' season when he scored for Morrisville on a 5 on 3 power play. Brockport needed help in order to have a chance at the postseason, and they got it.

    Brockport women's basketball ended its season on a high note with a 61-52 victory over Potsdam on Senior Day, Saturday, Feb. 18 after a tight loss to Plattsburgh Friday, Feb. 17 in the Play4Kay game. The win over Potsdam was Brockport's first SUNYAC win.

    Dancing with the Athletes took place Thursday, Feb. 16 and was presented by the Student Dance Organization and the College at Brockport athletic department. The show featured  15 different performances by different groups made up of both dancers and athletes.

  • Record-breaking weekend for Brockport track and field athletes

    The men and women of Brockport's track and field team sent two contingents to two separate meets Saturday, Feb. 15. While a small group went to compete at a meet at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), the majority of the team traveled to Kent, Ohio for the Kent State Invitational.

    The Brockport gymnastics team traveled to Pennsylvania Saturday, Feb. 18 and lost to Division-I Penn State in a dual meet. Penn State is ranked No. 10 in the nation. Following last week's season-high team score, the Eagles recorded a season-low of 183.

    Former NBA phenom, Allen Iverson, had his bank accounts seized by a Georgia court this week after failing to be able to pay a reported $860,000 bill to an Atlanta jeweler. The result of the court hearing broke the silence on the fact  Iverson has joined the ranks of superstar athletes who have gone broke following their retirement.

    As a kid, I can't remember going a day without playing some sort of sport. In a neighborhood full of kids, we were always competing over something.   I can remember riding my bike with my mitt on my handle bars and my bat on my shoulder to the nearest baseball diamond.

    Just like that, it's gone. A season is done, careers are finished. Lockers and desks are cleaned out. Except, unlike professional sports, in college the end of a season means so much more. We only get so much time in college. You can stay here forever if that's what you please, but you can't stay on the ice forever.

I don't think this season is going to be similar to what we've seen over the last couple years with a team like Butler making it to the finals twice. Most seasons in college basketball, the tournament is considered wide open, especially lately with the one-and-done players.

The No. 3 ranked Cardinals, a perennial SUNYAC powerhouse and two-time national champion, found themselves on the losing side against Brockport for the first time since Brockport head coach Brian Dickinson started at the college in 1996.

    Last week, the Brockport men's basketball team resumed regular season play with a pair of SUNYAC matchups against Fredonia and Buffalo State. Brockport played its way to victory in both games and as a result, extended its late-season winning streak to four games.

    Nationally No. 1 ranked Brockport scores season-high

    Brockport women's gymnastics team was back in action Friday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 12 and proved once again why its ranked No. 1 in the country among Division III schools. Friday night's quad meet was held at the University of Pennsylvania, where the Golden Eagles took third place with a team score of 186.

  • Strokes, dives and broken records

    Brockport's swimming and diving team competed in the SUNYAC championships at Erie Community College from Wednesday, Feb 8 through Saturday, Feb. 11. The women finished in sixth place and the men finished in seventh. Both teams finished in eighth place last year at the SUNYACs.
