The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team lost its season opener Saturday, March 2 on the road to the Alfred University Saxons by a score of 7-6.
Despite outshooting Alfred 48-26, the Golden Eagles weren't able to find the back of the net as much as Head Coach Ben Wineburg said he had hoped.
"We need to shoot the ball with better efficiency," Wineburg said. "We outshot them and if we had scored on 10 percent more of our shots we would have won."
Senior midfielder Zach Malecki said he was not proud of some of the shots that he took.
"I think as a team, we need to pick out our spots better," Malecki said. "To put it frankly, we weren't hitting the cage. Coach [John] VanHuben said it best, 'We need to turn our shooting drills in practice into scoring drills.'"
Malecki thought the transition from practicing indoors to playing outside might have had something to do with the team's offensive performance.
"I think we finally got out to the turf after practicing in a gym for five weeks and we forgot how to play our style of play," Malecki said. "We'll correct it in practice this week and find the cage when we take on RIT Wednesday."
Malecki said there is no doubt in his mind that the team will be able to find its offensive spark.
"We need to focus on putting the ball in the net," Malecki said. "We have plenty of talented shooters on our team and that will become evident as the season progresses."
Wineburg said he gives credit to Alfred's defense, which held Brockport to only six goals.
"They played well and their goalie made 11 saves," Wineburg said.
With regards to Brockport's defense, Malecki said he thought his team played spectacularly.
"Any time you keep a team under two goals per quarter you've got to be happy," Malecki said. "Colin King played a lights out game and Cory [Banwaree] had more saves than I think he was given credit for."
Another positive for the Eagles was their domination in the faceoff circle. Junior midfielder Keenan Sullivan was able to win 11 of 15 faceoffs.
Six different Eagles scored their first goals of the season Saturday.
Junior midfielder Bryon Palmer scored an unassisted goal to even up the score at 1-1 with 5:39 left in the first period. Alfred was able to score a goal just over a minute later to make the score 2-1.
Right after the Saxons scored another goal to start the second period, sophomore midfielder Nick Ciampi scored to bring Brockport back within one.
With 2:32 left in the second period, junior midfielder Kevin Conlon leveled the score on a pass from fellow junior midfielder Riley Austin. Alfred scored just over one minute later to make the score 4-3 heading in to halftime.
The Saxons scored the next two goals after halftime to take a three-goal advantage. The Eagles were scoreless until senior attacker Jesse Elliott found the back of the net with 43 seconds left in the third period to make it 6-4.
Brockport scored the first goal in the fourth period as Austin capitalized on an extra man advantage to bring the score back within one.
Alfred quickly responded to reclaim its two-goal lead. A goal by junior midfielder Steve Brissette with 1:40 left in the game was not enough as Alfred's defense forced a turnover to ensure the game ended with the score 7-6.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday, March 6 as they travel to RIT to take on the eighth ranked team in Division III lacrosse.
