UPDATE:

3:51 p.m. Whittemore is being charged with second-degree murder and entered a plea of not guilty at arraignment at the Sweden Town Court. According to court documents, the murder happened between 1 and 2:30 a.m.

3:45 p.m. Whittemore was previously arrested in 2011 for disorderly intoxication in public in Brevard County, Florida.

3:36 p.m. Whittemore is from New Hartford, N.Y. He was a star hockey player at New Hartford High School and named Division II State Hockey Player of the Year in 2010.

Clayton Whittemore, 21, was arrested Saturday morning and charged with murdering a female Brockport student, according to Monroe County Sheriffs' department.

Whittemore was caught at a thruway service stop in Dewitt, N.Y. at approximately 4 a.m. this morning according to police.

He was arraigned in Sweden Town Court Saturday afternoon.

In a press conference at the Public Safety Building in downtown Rochester, University Police Chief Robert Kehoe said UP received a call from the mother of the victim and officers went to the McLean Hall dorm room where the woman lived at to do a welfare check. He said the mother could not reach her by cell phone and was worried, prompting the call.

Kehoe said upon discovery of the victim, the Resident Director was contacted and no Resident Assistants were involved initially as he was aware of.

He said the student, whose name has not yet been released, was "brutally murdered" and sustained "extensive trauma to upper body."

He said officers are aware of a current dating relationship between the two and Whittemore was visiting with her last night. Kehoe said the weapon used is part of the investigation.

The victim lived in the first floor of McLean Hall and had a roommate. All residents of McLean are freshmen, graduate assistants or resident assistants. Graduate assistants and resident assistants have single rooms.

Counselors went floor to floor this morning to talk with McLean Hall residents. Students are not being held in the dorm, but many have been seen leaving the hall with parents, as well as some with full backpacks and purses.
