Frank Warren, founder of the famous blog PostSecret, will be coming to speak at Brockport, as released by Brockport Student Government (BSG) Monday, Feb. 18.

For those who have not yet been introduced to the social media craze that is Post Secret, here's a brief rundown: It started as a blog in 2005 and reached international fame within a few years. The movement is often referred to as a "community mail art project." The only thing you need to participate is a postcard and a secret that has never escaped your lips.

Warren got the idea he could help people by combining anonymity and a sense of community. He started a blog asking for people to send a self-decorated postcard with a secret written on it they had never told before. Before he knew it, he was receiving about a thousand postcards a week.

The idea of Warren's project is to help people experience the relief that comes with expressing a deep secret they don't feel comfortable telling anyone else without attaching their name to it. By doing so, he is able to create a community of people who are sharing their innermost desires, fears and hopes without being judged for it. It not only gives courage to the people telling secrets, but to the people reading the secrets who may have had the same experiences or share the same feelings.

After a few years of running the blog and receiving a great number of postcards regarding suicide, Warren teamed up with Hopeline, a suicide prevention hotline. Warren is constantly looking for ways to spread hope as far as he possibly can. Warren has extended his talents to speaking at colleges across the country, sharing secrets he has received and feels almost everyone can relate to. He has also compiled secrets into a series of books, most of which have themes the secrets revolve around. Many of them have topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.

Each Sunday, Warren posts up to 20 pictures of postcards he handpicks to put on the PostSecret website. The postcards are all decorated by the sender, whether it be with crayons and markers or paint. Some people choose to print out an image and paste it onto the postcard and write over it. Others treat the postcard as a canvas and create a small work of art with their darkest secret spilled onto it.

This event has been planned by BSG and its programming and marketing department.

"We sent out a survey. The votes for Frank Warren were overwhelming," said Sean Ferguson, BSG's programming chair. "We thought, 'This guy is affordable,' and I think he'd be a great influence on the students.

"PostSecret has been an idea that has been bouncing around between Nick [Morticelli] (Director of Programming) and I for a year or so. It finally got to the point where we said, 'It's time.' He's been topping the surveys every time."

Warren will be at the Union Ballroom March 5 at 9:30 p.m. The doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are free to students and $5 for non-students. Students are asked to bring their student I.D. to the event so they can be swiped at the door rather than buying tickets at the box office.

According to BSG, it cost $15,000 to bring Warren to campus.
