BSG Roundup: Plans for the future

As this semester comes to an end, the members of the Brockport Student Government at The College at Brockport are wrapping up their fall to-do lists and preparing for the upcoming spring session.

Members of BSG are still working as we prepare for finals; during their latest meeting, instead of telling the board and attendees what happened this week, BSG President Devin Bonner took a different route, noting what BSG is currently working on.

Bonner is creating a training module for future presidents so they can understand BSG and take whatever routes they please to with training. In order to do so, Bonner is coming up with learning outcomes and seminars that can be influential. This gives future presidents knowledge of what training should be expected.

Bonner also met with the Director of Career Services Jill Wesley to see if BSG executives and members can obtain class credits. Bonner used herself as an example. As a former Residential Assistant, Bonner used to get a stipend for room and board. When she took her role in BSG, she took a financial hit because BSG doesn’t cover room and board. So she wants equal opportunity for all students. BSG is in discussion with administration to see if it is possible for BSG to have elected roles with credits attached. It could potentially free up more time that one can either subsidize with a different job or pursue other work.

Further into the discussion, the members of the Art Placement committee are contracting somebody to do some renovations to the fountain. The fountain is currently very old and falling apart. Along with the renovations, the fountain will have an art piece.

Along with the campus construction, some new work is underway with the train route. The train that passes through campus right near the town homes by the walkway does not have cautionary alerts such as flashing lights or a bar that comes down when a train is coming. Last Monday, Nov. 28, Bonner stated that the train almost hit somebody. After a few calls to the president’s office, a barrier will soon be installed.

The other board members of BSG gave reports of what happened this week in their committee such as cancelled events, club collaborations and meetings held. Throughout the meeting they also followed their original routine by taking several votes on issues and motions they want to address and fix on campus and finished off with the appointment of two new members on their Marketing staff.
