Printing quota set at 450 single-sided pages per semester

More than seven million. That is not the Mega Millions Jackpot, it is the number of pages printed in Brockport's computer labs this year, and there are still a couple of weeks to go. For years Brockport has offered unlimited printing to students in the labs. While other area colleges had already implemented print quotas, Brockport students have been able to print as much as they wanted in the labs. That is about to change.

Beginning in fall 2010 the college will implement a new printing policy. This new policy sets limits on the amount of free printing in the labs.

The policy, which will soon be posted to the Web, specifies that students can print 450 single-sided prints, or 300 double-sided sided prints per semester without incurring additional charges. The three hundred double sided is equivalent to 600 pages per semester. This quota compares quite favorably to the smaller quotas at other SUNY schools.

While the vast majority of students do not abuse their printing privileges, some do. This year there are several students that have printed in excess of 5,000 pages. The college simply cannot provide unlimited printing, especially considering the economic climate we are in.

The quotas were set using data and are designed to curtail the excessive print users while allowing for a reasonable amount of printing. According to LITS staff, most students should feel little to no effect from the quotas.
