Dear Career Counselor,

I'm a transfer student coming in as a junior to Brockport, and I have no idea what Career Services does. Can you highlight some of your most helpful services and events for students?

-Transfer Tricia

Dear Tricia,

Career Services does many things for the students at Brockport. First, let me tell how you can find us and get into contact with us. We are located in Rakov (next to the Union), next to Academic Advisement. Students can drop in to talk about résumés, cover letters or major and career questions Monday through Friday, noon to 2 p.m.

Besides this option, we have an e-mail address (csresume@brockport.edu) that students can e-mail their cover letter and résumé to get feedback from a professional within 48 hours. Our professionals are also available for hour-long appointments for more in-depth questions and concerns. To schedule an appointment, call us at (585)395-2159. And for those commuting from the Rochester area we also have a satellite office in the MetroCenter staffed by a professional.

Career Services also offers a wide array of internship options. We run four different internship programs including America Reads, Brockport Career Exploration Course, Albany Semester Program and Disney internship. America Reads is great for students who are interested in getting involved with teaching and tutoring. BCEC can be used in any internship setting, and students can do between one to six credits every semester. Albany Semester can be done in or in local offices that deal with political or governmental affairs.

The Disney internship is located in Florida and California. Representatives will be here to discuss the ins and outs of the program in Union 119 from 5 to 7 p.m. March 8 and 9. Stop by if you are interested in learning more.

We also have many ways to find jobs or internships. JobShop, our online database of job listings both on and off campus, full and part-time can be accessed 24/7 at www.brockport.edu/career. We also have several events coming up this semester that will connect students with employers either for internships or jobs.

Career Services will be hosting a Jobs and Internship Fair from noon to 2 p.m. March 31 in the Union Ballroom. There students will have the opportunity to discuss jobs and internships with various employers in the area. Another great event we hold during the spring semester is on-campus recruiting. This is an opportunity for students to submit resumes to companies and have their interview right on the Brockport campus.
