Several Golden Eagles teams took off and flew to the successful stars last fall. Perhaps the most successful team of all the Brockport squads was the men's soccer team.
They came into the season as the defending conference champions. And behind goalie Joe Marino — who recently signed a contract with the Rochester Rhinos — and the stingy defense, Brockport made it all the way back to the SUNYAC finals where they fell to Plattsburgh in a penalty kick shootout. Plattsburgh suffered the defeat in the finals to Brockport the previous year.
The women's soccer squad displayed a great season as well. The Golden Eagle girls advanced to the ECAC championship for the third year in a row. The team went 9-9-1 overall which marked a .500 or better record for the 20th season in a row.
The Brockport field hockey team surprised SUNYAC foes last fall when the team won eight games and qualified for the inaugural conference tournament. And the team will look to rebuild upon last year's success as they return a key nucleus of players, including sophomore Jessica Blind, junior Jackie Massoni and sophomore Gina Stephens. All three of the aforementioned athletes earned All-SUNYAC honors at the conclusion of last season.
The tennis team introduces Ben Klempka, the new head coach, who takes over for the women's tennis team who went 5-10 last season.
The cross country team returns a handful of great runners, but the loss of Matt Avery to graduation will certainly hurt the team this season. Last fall, the senior broke the college's 8K record with a blistering time of 25 minutes and five seconds.
Senior Kelly Nowak returns to lead the women's volleyball team. The squad went 3-5 in SUNYAC competition last year. The loss of Kristi Schrants to graduation leaves a gap, but the young team has plenty of talent to fill the void left in her wake.
Lastly, Ellsworth wants you to come out and support your Golden Eagles teams as often as possible this year.
