BSG acts to improve BASC services

In a symbolic gesture, the Brockport Student Government (BSG) board of directors unanimously passed a resolution during its Friday, April 20 board meeting, stating College at Brockport students are dissatisfied with the Brockport Auxiliary Service Corporation (BASC).
The resolution cites high prices at Union Square and TRAX, inconvenient hours of operation, a lack of selections in dining halls, and a lack of a dining location at the MetroCenter in Rochester as reasons for students’ supposed dissatisfaction with BASC.
The resolution calls for lower prices, a larger variety of foods, a change in the operational hours of Union Square, a “takeout option” at dining halls and a small food operation at the MetroCenter.
“We wanted to send a message to BASC so they know how the students feel,” said BSG off-campus representative Stephen Harrington, who sponsored the resolution. “We would like to see BASC listening a little closer to students to understand what their grievances are.”
Harrington said he hopes the resolution will prompt BASC administrators to reconsider the dining halls’ no-take-out policy and to change the hours of the Union Square so future students can grab a bite to eat before night class or on Friday afternoon.
Harrington sponsored similar legislation earlier this semester regarding SERC, saying these board actions help make the college’s administration aware of the grievances some students have.
BASC Assistant Executive Director Kevin Craig said BASC pays careful attention to students’ opinions, which is why BASC has been rated the No. 1 dining service in the SUNY system by the American College Testing Program (ACT) since 1994.
“Dining Services does an incredible amount of feedback gathering from our customers through the year through surveys and focus groups,” Craig wrote in an email to The Stylus. “… Many factors, including cost of goods, prices of comparable items at local eateries and customer expectations, are considered when establishing retail pricing.”
The price of dining plans for the 2012-13 academic year will increase 2.5 percent from the price of this year, Craig said.
This fall, BASC will also begin offering $250 and $500 dining dollar blocks, and will bring back the Network Plan (25 meals and 25 guest passes for dining halls) for commuters and town home students.
Craig said every summer BASC samples the prices of products at local eateries, which it uses as a base for its own prices. Some food items are priced higher than local establishments and some lower, but BASC’s goal is to be in the mid-range, Craig said.
This summer BASC will also review its menu options and the operational hours of on-campus dining locations. Craig said he expects the recent hiring of Executive Chef Richard Reynolds will create tasty new menu options for students.
“His goals are to develop recipes and menus,” Craig said. “Every summer we review our dining hall menus and remove unpopular items.”
BASC administrators regularly consider implementing some of the resolution’s requests, such as a dining operation at the MetroCenter and a takeout option at dining halls, Craig said.
“As we look at our meal plans, and where we fall in SUNY, we have to be very cognizant of [what we offer],” Craig said. “We have to be careful of how we provide value and service at the same time.”
One possible student concern not mentioned in the resolution is the security of payments at on-campus dining locations. Hundreds of students and faculty have recently reported having their bank accounts compromised as a result of a credit or debit card purchase on campus.
BASC, Information Technology (IT) services, University Police (UP) and other law enforcement bodies have partnered with an outside agency, Trustwave, to identify the security breach.
Craig said credit and debit card transactions will remain suspended at on-campus locations for the rest of the semester, as “We are working to provide additional security remediation over the course of the next several weeks and months,” Craig said. “We anticipate we will be operational (for credit and debit card transactions) at the start of the fall semester.”
