The College at Brockport women's swimming and diving team placed third and the men placed fourth at the Fredonia Invitational this past weekend.
A team effort by the women resulted in 531 points, good enough to place in the competition. However, Fredonia dominated the home invitational and took first with a total of 1,016 points. Saint Vincent College finished ahead of the Golden Eagles with 801.5 points.
Sophomore Erin Luke was the top finisher for Brockport Nov. 4, the final day of competition. Luke took third place in the 100-yard backstroke and also helped Brockport finish fifth in the 200-yard medley relay and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The 400-yard freestyle relay, made up of sophomore Paige Whitney, sophomore Amy Jessmer, freshman Mackenzie Wilcox and Luke broke the school record with a time of 4:24.62 and took third place in the final event of the competition.
Other contributors to the win included Chloe Macdonald who placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and Alanna Blasting who took fourth in the 400-yard individual medley. Blasting finished the event a minute faster than her previous best time this season. Her time also beat the school record by five seconds.
Penn State Behrend took first in the men's division, finishing with 895 points. Brockport ended the competition with 537 points, trailing third-place finisher Oswego by only four points. Second-place winner Fredonia finished with 566.5 points.
Senior Chris Austin was the men's top finisher, capturing third in the 1-meter diving event. Austin scored a 433.95 in the competition.
Freshman Max Brynin and junior Kyle Bree finished fourth and sixth respectively in the 400-IM. The 400-yard relay team, consisting of Nathan Dubois, Cody Burns, Kenny Smith and Joe Klafehn finished fourth in the event.
The event came down to the wire, featuring a tight run for second to fifth place. Chris O'Connell took sixth place and Marc Toth finished 14th in the 200-yard breaststroke.
"The men's team took hard losses to both Fredonia and Oswego that came down to the final day of events," Bree said. "But now we know where we need to work in order to capitalize at the SUNYACs."
Brockport's swimming and diving's next event is against Monroe Community College (MCC). The competition is a home event at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.
